I wasn’t looking carefully enough at Ada’s arms through these pages- I thought they were just tied behind her back as well. When she referred to her “state,” I looked more carefully and was suddenly, “Whoa! Her arms!”

Heh. Yeah, I suspect that was the idea – it’s a subversion of the reader’s automatic expectations. I didn’t notice either.
